047: 여러 전치사를 이용하여 4형식 문장을 3형식 문장으로 바꾸기

4형식 문장은 동사 뒤에 간접 목적어가 오고, 그 뒤에 직접 목적어가 온다.

이런 구조를 가진 4형식 문장의 간접 목적어와 직접 목적어의 순서를 바꿀

수 있다. 즉 직접 목적어를 동사 바로 뒤에 놓고, 간접 목적어를 그 뒤로

돌릴 수 있다. 이 경우 간접 목적어 앞에는 적절한 전치사를 붙여야 한다.

이렇게 되면 3형식 문장이 되며, 간접 목적어는 전치사와 함께 전치사구를

만들어 동사를 수식하게 된다. 부사적인 전치사구가 된다.

 

Ⅰ. 전치사 to를 이용한다.

- 동사가 give, send, show, teach, tell, bring, lend, offer 등일 때

   ① I gave him the hat. - 4형식

   → I gave the hat to him.(나는 그에게 모자를 주었다.) - 3형식

   - 직접 목적어인 hat을 동사 바로 뒤에 놓으면, 간접 목적어인 him 앞에

     전치사 to가 붙는다. 이럴 경우, 간접 목적어였던 him은 전치사 to와 함께 전치사구가 되

     동사를 수식하는 부사구가 된다.

 

   ② I sent my mother the birthday present. - 4형식

   → I sent the birthday present to my mother. - 3형식

        (나는 나의 어머님께 생일 선물을 보내드렸다.)

 

   ③ My grandmother would tell me a ghost story. - 4형식

   → My grandmother would tell a ghost story to me. - 3형식

        (나의 할머니께서 나에게 유령<귀신> 이야기를 말해주곤 하셨다.)

 

   ④ My friend showed her a new digital camera. - 4형식

   → My friend showed a new digital camera to her. - 3형식

        (내 친구가 그녀에게 새 디지털 카메라를 보여주었다.)

 

   ⑤ His illness may teach him the dangers of smoking. - 4형식

    → His illness may teach the dangers of smoking to him. - 3형식

         (그의 병은 그에게 담배피는 것의 위험들을 가르쳐 줄지도 모른다.)

 

   ⑥ My friend lent me her umbrella. - 4형식

    → My friend lent it to me. - 3형식

        (나의 친구가 나에게 그녀의 우산을 빌려주었다.)

    - it = her umbrella

 

Ⅱ. 전치사 for를 이용한다.

- 동사가 buy, make, get, choose, find, build, leave, cook, order 등일 때.

   ① I bought my son a new computer. - 4형식

   → I bought a new computer for my son. - 3형식

        (나는 나의 아들에게 새 컴퓨터를 사주었다.)

 

   ② She made me a pretty suit. - 4형식

   → She made a pretty suit for me. - 3형식

        (그녀가 나에게 예쁜 옷 한 벌을 만들어 주었다.)

 

   ③ Her father left her a little money. - 4형식

   → Her father left a little money for her. - 3형식

        (그녀의 아버지는 그녀에게 약간의 돈을 남겨주었다.)

 

   ④ She chose me a nice present. - 4형식

   → She chose a nice present for me. - 3형식

        (그녀가 나에게 멋진 선물을 골라주었다.)

 

   ⑤ I built my parents a small villa on the hill. - 4형식

   → I built a small villa on the hill for my parents. - 3형식

       (나는 나의 부모님께 작은 빌라를 언덕 위에 지어드렸다.)

 

Ⅲ. 전치사 of를 이용한다.

- 동사가 ask, beg, inquire 등일 경우

   ① My teacher asked me a difficult question. - 4형식

   → My teacher asked a difficult question of me. - 3형식

        (나의 선생님께서 나에게 어려운 질문을 물었다.)

   - 주의: ‘of me’를 ‘나의’로 번역하지 않고 ‘나에게’로 번역한다.

 

   ② We inquired the weather bureau weather conditions. - 4형식

   → We inquired weather conditions of the weather bureau.

        (우리는 기상대에 날씨에 관하여 물었다<알아보았다>.)

 

Ⅳ. 전치사 on을 이용한다.

- 동사가 play일 경우

   ① He played me a trick. - 4형식

   → He played a trick on me. - 3형식

        (그는 나에게 장난<사기>를 쳤다.)

	⟵ The waiter brought us the wrong dish. dish는 보통 접시를 가리키지만, 여기서는 음식이나 요리를 말한다.

0463	My father built a small house for his old mother.
	⟵ My father built his old mother a small house.

0464	They cooked an enormous meal for my family.
	⟵ They cooked my family an enormous meal.

 

0465	I will order the new books for you.
	⟵ I will order you the new books.

0466	I will get more coffee for you.
	⟵ I will get you more coffee. get은 보통 ‘가지다’의 의미지만, 여기서는 ‘…하게 하다, 가져다 주다’의 뜻이다. ‘[식사를] 준비하다(get super)’의 뜻도 가진다.

0467	He begged some money of me.
	⟵ He begged me some money.

0468	Will you find a good job for me?
	⟵ Will you find me a good job?

0469	1. May I ask a favor of you? 2. Would you do a favor for me?
	⟵ 1. May I ask you a favor? ⟵ 2. Would you do me a favor? 동사 ask는 ‘of’를 사용하며, 동사 do는 ‘for’를 사용한다.

0470	He played a joke on me.
	⟵ He played me a joke.
